Challenge

Scaling Compliance Reviews Without Overwhelming the Team

Alviere works with global enterprises, providing financial products at scale. Building complex embedded finance programs means more customers, new products, and higher transaction volume — and unfortunately, more opportunities for bad actors to slip through.

Identity fraud has more than doubled in the past three years, and synthetic identities in North America have jumped over 300% year-over-year. Alviere’s compliance team responded with tighter rules and lower risk thresholds, which catch more potential issues but also generate far more alerts.

The results were queues where roughly 80% of cases were false positives that still needed to be reviewed. And when doing so manually can cost $5-10 per alert, that’s tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars spent just to confirm.

Alviere relied on Hawk to monitor transactions, run sanctions and PEP screening, and generate AML alerts and cases inside its own case-management workspace. Analysts investigated each alert manually by navigating between Hawk, the Alviere HIVE platform, and external data sources. They were also responsible for case narratives and escalation notes — a process that was accurate, but time‑consuming and hard to scale as volumes grew.

Alviere’s embedded finance programs onboard business accounts and tens of thousands of end customers handling millions of card and payment transactions every month. At that scale, false positives were overwhelming analysts and risking delays in customer onboarding.

And these delays would translate into real lost revenue. When customers are stuck in review, abandonment spikes. KYC flows that take too long can drive drop-off rates as high as 40%.

Alviere started looking for an automation solution to relieve pressure on its compliance team, but knew it couldn’t come at the expense of trust. Regulators, auditors, and internal teams needed clear, defensible reasoning for every decision, so any solution had to do more than just clear alerts.

That’s when they found Sphinx.

Solution

Embedding Transparent, Explainable AI

The Sphinx implementation was simple and fast, requiring no development hours from the Alviere team. Because the go-live didn’t depend on engineering schedules, the AI agents were up and running fast.

The setup is simple: Hawk monitors transactions in real time and generates alerts, then Sphinx takes over. The AI agents work directly on top of Alviere’s existing systems, like a human analyst would – logging in with a username and password.

Every single alert is reviewed against Alviere’s policies, and from there, the system produces one of two outcomes:

  • Closed as a false positive, with reasoning in plain language, citing specific data or policy rules.
  • Escalated as a potential true positive case with a short memo summarizing the risk, making it clear why human review is needed.

‍By the time something reaches an analyst, it’s already been sorted and explained. Analysts now focus only on the alerts that show real signs of risk — eliminating thousands of cases from manual review.

The impact extends beyond the compliance team. With Sphinx filtering out false positives in seconds, legitimate customers move through onboarding faster, leading to higher completion rates.

To keep regulators equally confident, every decision includes a clear audit trail, with all actions taken by the AI agent visible in the UI. This transparency reduces back-and-forth with auditors and makes it easier to prove controls are working as intended.

With Sphinx, the Alviere team now feels like they have an extra analyst on the team – one that works around the clock. Human analysts focus on meaningful cases, requests for information become more targeted, and onboarding is smoother for customers. Alviere no longer faces a choice between compliance, growth, and customer experience.

Results

Alviere automates 86% of compliance cases with Sphinx

With Sphinx, Alviere has a compliance engine that can keep pace with its global ambitions.

The results:

  • 86.1% of cases automatically closed, or 99.7% when including escalations
  • 98.7% false positives detection rate
  • 17 days of manual work saved in a single month

As Alviere launches new programs, it does so with fewer false positives, faster onboarding, and decisions that are already documented to stand up to future audits.

Looking ahead, Alviere and Sphinx are working to bring the same approach to other parts of the compliance lifecycle. With scale the volume of reviews will only grow, and the playbook that works for AML alerts can extend to KYC refreshes, enhanced due diligence, and ongoing monitoring. The foundation is already in place: explainable decisions, clear audit trails, and a system that scales without adding headcount.
